Six Senior School teams presented the results of a semester-long design challenge focused on accessible environmental monitoring. Their brief was to create a sensor that community gardeners could assemble, calibrate, and repair with widely available parts.
Students worked with the fictional Lumen City Botanical Forum to define useful measurements, then tested prototypes against laboratory equipment. The final designs measured temperature, conductivity, and turbidity while documenting uncertainty clearly.
The project will continue next term as students refine weatherproof housings and publish a classroom-ready build guide. The work earned the fictional 2026 Northbridge Civic Learning Commendation.
